Carngrove Hotel
Carngrove Hotel
This photo shows the Carngrove Hotel being demolished. This was Mr George Stanley (who was the managing director of the gasworks till his death in 1975) house which he made into the hotel. Unfortunately he didn’t see it as he passed away shortly after getting the licence for alcohol. You can read more about Mr George Stanley in the Gasworks book.

Gasworks book sale
Gasworks book sale
Over the next few weeks I will be adding articles from each of our books. Please keep watching. Also I still have some Gasworks and Irish Wade books for sale. Gasworks are £10 and Irish Wade are £5. The Society needs to sell as many books as we can just to keep running. The last book although we got some funding from local businesses it wasn’t enough and the Society paid for the rest as well as the research for the book which was quite a lot of money. So please if you can and you haven’t bought either book please contact myself (Robert Matchett) Secretary on 07846782466 and the Society will either post or bring the books to you depending on distance. Postage UK is £5 and outside of UK £15. All money goes back to the Society and will help us in producing new books, research and giving talks to other societies, schools and whoever asks us about local history and especially of the Edenderry area of Portadown it will help us maintain our websites www.edenderryhistoricalsociety.co.uk. Www.irishwade.co.uk and our Facebook page Edenderry Historical Society.

The repaired original Gasworks gates today. If you look closely you will see that some of the original parts had to be omitted due to being so badly damaged.

In this photograph see what the original Portadown Gasworks gates looked like before they were taken for repair. Unfortunately in the repair the members were not able to keep everything from the original gates as they had badly deteriorated beyond repair.
